Its quite funny!

Google recently launched the iGoogle Themes API, which allows for user-generated iGoogle Themes. Now, anyone who can design a webpage can design an iGoogle theme. The Themes API lets you create custom designs for iGoogle. Themes are visual designs that personalize iGoogle pages for millions of users. Themes are not just static designs--they can change throughout the day to reveal a visual storyline, message, or anything else.

Gmail Google introduced a new feature in Gmail. This Gmail feature lets you create your personal mailing list using contact groups. This feature is compatible with IE7 and Firefox 2.

This feature is very helpful for those people who email updates to their friends, relatives or employees often. In general, if we have to email to a large no. of peoples frequently then we have to remember individual names or email addresses. Sometimes we miss one or more of them.

But now, with the help of Gmail, you can create contact groups to which you email updates often.

A few weeks ago Gmail invited people to share their Gmail stories with the world, and they got over 1,500 of responses with emails and videos describing the Creative and Productive Ways of using Gmail.

To check out some of the email stories of people's, visit gmail.com/yourstory. And here is the collaborative video.

Google maps customized. Makes a difference now.

www.youthsprouts.blogspot.com

Add to Technorati Favorites Google Maps began layering in custom options and even collaborative features last year, but this latest release takes the wiki-like functionality of user-generated map edits to a heightened level. One may even think that Google is more readily relying on user-submitted map edits for the upkeep of its maps.

Google users in the U.S. and Australia are now able to make edits on a given map, marking various changes or updates to a particular location. Say a business has closed down, but Google’s associated search doesn’t know that just yet. You do! Let Google know. It helps out others that may search for that business later on down the line. In addition to editing an existing place on the map, you can also add new places.

Just like a wiki, Google will archive the history of all the edits made, so misinformation can hopefully be curbed in this manner. While Google has made several pushes for leveraging the community for upkeep of its local search data, this new release is the most intuitive and self-contained solution I’ve seen yet.

The secret of two hidden messages in Google 2008 Logo. DON'T YOU WORRY ITS ALL A MYTH

www.youthsprouts.blogspot.com Add to Technorati Favorites

The secrete messages in Google's 2008 logo revealed. Google put silently two hidden messages in its 2008 logo. Google is celebrating 25 years of TCP/IP and the New Year.

1

Following are the two messages, with its meaning.

1) In this message Google is showing a cable making 2008.

Google Secrete Message 1

2) The second message shows "SYN SYN/ACK ACK" on the bottom of the logo in little colored dots (see carefully).

Google Secrete Message 2

What is syn syn ack ack?

The syn syn ack ack is referred as a "Three Way Handshake."

To establish a connection, TCP uses a three-way handshake. Before a client attempts to connect with a server, the server must first bind to a port to open it up for connections: this is called a passive open. Once the passive open is established, a client may initiate an active open. To establish a connection, the three-way (or 3-step) handshake occurs: Wikipedia

The "SYN" flags are requests by the TCP stack at one end of a socket to synchronize themselves to the sequence numbering for this new sessions. The ACK flags acknowlege earlier packets in this session. Obviously only the initial packet has no ACK flag, since there are no previous packets to acknowlege. Only the second packet (the first response from a server to a client) has both the SYN and the ACK bits set. linuxgazette.

In the neverending journey for sockets to shake hands, there has always been the cordial behind the scenes introduction. To imagine life without SYN/ACK would be akin to imagining life without the Internet. And that's quite scary

Soashable: Create Your Own Meebo with this Open Source Project

www.youthsprouts.blogspot.com

soashable If you visit Soashable, your first thought is probably “Meebo clone.” That’s because it is. However, it’s also an open source project, freely available for anyone to download and build their own version (via SourceForge).

It’s currently very beta (v0.1), and for now, doesn’t offer a lot of what Meebo does (games, chat rooms, widgets, a developer platform, etc.), but that’s sort of the point. Soashable has duplicated the main Meebo service – multi-protocol, web-based chat - and left the door open for developers to build their own custom versions. It’s an attractive proposition given IM is an application that people keep open for hours on end, and will hence keep them on your web site for a much longer period.

    soashable

The project was launched by Harlan Iverson, who blogs about it here, and provides details of how you can get it up and running on your own server. Meebo might not have anything to be worried about yet, but Iverson is clearly committed to bringing competition to the IM space. He writes:

“Soashable is Open Source because I believe that any one or any company should be able to creating a competing product, in a cooperative way, as this raises the user experience bar for everyone. I hope it serves as the base for research of web-based UIs, public-facing commercial applications, internal communication applications, and tools in every niche imaginable. XMPP truly is the future of online communication, and finally, I am proud to be able to provide you with yet-another-tool that utilizes it.”

This should be an interesting project to watch. If you launch anything with it, let us know!

Wikio is new wiki. Wikio’s New Version Adds Shopping and Videos

www.youthsprouts.blogspot.com

wikio logo

Wikio, one of those startups that was doing quite well in Europe before they decided to conquer the US market, has launched a new version of the site. I remember the first version best; it seemed to me like a Digg clone - solid, but not a particularly inspired one. With the next iteration of the site they moved into the news aggregation/memetracking category, without losing the Digg-like voting on items; our own Adam called it the Rolls Royce of memetrackers. Yes, we know everyone hates that word. That’s why we use it so often. Memetrackers.

Anyway, Wikio’s latest version is a redesign, but there are a lot of important new features under the hood. First, there’s now a “shopping” section which - despite being touted as “beta” - actually works well. Items are divided into categories, and for each item you get, besides the standard user votes, a price range, links to reviews, related news, and a price comparison engine. The only thing that’s missing is the range of products, but the shopping section has been filled up quite well already considering that it’s quite young. I’m guessing it’s just a matter of time.

wikio shopping
Videos look just like Digg’s video section, but with one important difference: you can see related videos and articles for each video, Techmeme-style. The results are really good; take this video of a robotic dog for example. You get 2 related videos and 35 related articles, and all of them really are related to the video in question. The ability to create completely customized pages, as well as the top 100 list of blogs are still here, and the former has one new great option: you can now do a search for a term, click on “subscribe” and instantly get a customized page filtered by the keyword of your choosing. Quick, simple, and useful. Finally, on Wikio Live you can see new articles and videos as they appear, similar to Digg Spy. Good stuff for total news junkies. Despite all the new stuff, the big question here is how good a job is Wikio doing at giving you the news that’s really hot right now? I’d still say that Techmeme takes the cake here, simply because I like its visual presentation better. Wikio isn’t bad either; the news is fresh and relevant across all categories. I’m not sure, however, what role do the votes on individual items have; from what I can see, the items are never sorted according to the number of votes.
wikio blogs

All in all, one can’t deny that Wikio is trying, hard. I wrote about sites which we like to call memtrackers - Techmeme, Tailrank, Megite - quite a bit, but everyone seems to be returning to Techmeme because it’s focused on one subject (technology), because it’s really fast, and because the news is almost always relevant. I’m not sure that Wikio managed to be better with this regard, but they’ve done a lot in other areas - options, personalization, organization, presentation. If browsing through lots of news is a part of your daily routine, Wikio is a site worthy of your time.

See the video presentation of the new features below.
